The Maccabees
Live Review

I have a new crush, and it's on The Maccabees. If The Rakes and The Futureheads had a love child, they would have produced The Maccabees. Last week Wednesday's show at the Knitting Factory had Heypenny as the first openers, followed by The Maccabees, then The Noisettes, who, along with The Maccabees are on tour supporting Bloc Party in the US. Having heard a couple of Maccabees songs before the show I was a little underwhelmed and apprehensive of what was to come. I thought they were going to be the next over-hyped band that didn't live up to my expectations and I had prepared myself to be disappointed. Not even one full song into their forty minute set my heart thawed and I fell in love. They're an exceptionally clever band and you literally can see the creativity oozing from all of the members while they're on stage. Normally when UK bands try to break America they're met with the New Yorker cold shoulder syndrome but this was anything but the case at this show. The crowd was clearly at The Maccabees' beck and call and you could tell the band was just as pleased with the crowd as the crowd was with the band. Their live show has what most bands are lacking, and that's enthusiasm. I have never seen a band have such a strong interaction and connection with their audience as I did while witnessing The Maccabees and their followers (do you see the pun)? This will absolutely be a show that years down the line people will be jealous that you attended, and even though they weren't the headliners, they will far surpass the main act in what I believe will be a short time.
