Oh Tom Brady...
Love ya for trying...Dave from Leytonstone

Why is it that certain looks work for some people, and don't work at all for others? It's a mystery of human physiology. I refuse to believe it is an dude vs. bloke thing. But something about Tom Brady just looks... I dunno... Off. Like he just doesn't quite.... feel right... or pull this off.
I think the David Beckham comparisons are fair. You did it to yourself, Tom. The instant you tied and tucked that pashmina. The hat and glasses maybe? with the cable knit? The casual friday chino? something.
Or maybe that he's kinda posing for the camera, like he's really proud of his look that day. Maybe he's projecting a bit of desperation?
I dunno. You decide.

PLAY BALL!!
In Honor of America's Past-time...Opening Day from NYC
Every opening day, we like to have important people (celebrities, legendary ex-ballplayers, politicians) throw out the ceremonial first pitch. In D.C., President Bush came out to boo's and threw out the first pitch. Last year, in Cincinnati, Mayor Mark Mallory came out to christen the new baseball season.
Geez, Mayor...

Pharrell Can't Be Stopped...
Old News Worth ReMentioningMe from NY

ALL THE GIRLS STANDING IN THE LINE FOR THE BATHROOM - the hook in N.E.R.D.'s new single, "Everyone Nose," refers to girls at clubs waiting to do blow. And everyone knows. Not a startling revelation. Nor is this blog post a scoop by any means. But I just needed an excuse to do a post on Pharrell, who is my hero (and my top friend on Myspace).
The beat is fire. New album, "Seeing Sounds," due in June. I, for one, can barely contain myself.

The A-Team Movie is a Go!!
I'll believe it when I see it...Me from NY2LON Headquarters
So, rumor has it that the A-Team movie is being rescued from no-man's land, where it has been languishing for about a decade. John Singleton is set to direct; Michael Bandt and Derek Haas will write the screenplay. So who's playing who? The cast has yet to be determined, but everyone's a casting director these days, no? Some are more confirmed than others, but here's an educated guess...
HANNIBAL - GEORGE CLOONEY

I love it when a plan comes together.
FACE - OWEN WILSON

How YOU doin'
MURDOCK - WOODY HARRELSON.. Director Singleton has come out and said he really, really wants it to be him.

Awooooooooooo!
B.A. BARACUS - ICE CUBE openly talks about the role, and he's worked with Singleton when he starred in the director's debut, 'Boyz N the Hood.'

Fuck tha police
Yea yeah, ok..
I pity the fool
While I think Brad Pitt would make a good Face, i think the Clooney/Pitt combo would just overshadow everything else... The movie would lose its balance, you know what I mean? Plus, George Clooney, Brad Pitt... and then Ice Cube and Woody Harrelson... Sounds more like Ocean's 15 to me.
That said, I got to thinking... How boutttttt....
Hannibal: Ed Harris, Philip Seymore Hoffman (cause he can play any part), Jake Taylor from Major League (aka Tom Berenger), or Bill Parcells
Face: James Marsden (too young), Jefferson D'arcy (too old), Tom Glavine (not an actor, and no one in New York would go see it, purely based on principle.)
Murdock: i'm sorry, Woody Harrelson, like, is murdock. I've heard Jim Carrey, but... no. And I've also heard Johnny Knoxville. Come on, folks. Get a grip.
B.A.: Just let Mr. T do itttttt.. I mean, let's be honest, homeboy hasn't aged a bit. Or just go with Philip Seymore Hoffman...

Mick Jagger Owes Life To Poseidon...
Hell's Angels took to the sea... apparently...MQ from NYC

According to the The Smoking Gun, the Hell's Angels' plot to murder Mick Jagger was thwarted by a freak storm that sank their boat on their way to Jagger's house on Long Island.
Can't make this stuff up.
I know what you're wondering... One attempt? That's it?
Then I thought about it. You're in the Hell's Angels. You are a bad-as-fuck motorcycle gang. You hatch a scheme to murder Mick Jagger. Inexplicably, you find yourself on a boat.. on your way to murder Mick Jagger.. I ask: What did they think was gonna happen?
This: They run into the wrath and fury of the sea... Their boat flips and sinks.
Dude. Not in the cards. Move on. Maybe aim lower next time. Defenseless hippies certainly won't have divine intervention on their side.

MAXIM Reviews Black Crowes CD Before Listening To It...
Probably The Best Review It's Gonna GetMe at NY2LON Headquarters

Let's face it, this must happen all the time.
For those of you who have not heard, The Black Crowes' upcoming album, Warpaint, was given 2.5 stars out of 5, by Maxim Magazine. The only problem, according to the Black Crowes website, is that there is no way anyone at the magazine could have heard the album, because preview copies had not even been made available. Chances are, they heard one song (the single had been made available) and projected a review for the rest, which explains why, when asked, the magazine came up with: it was an "educated guess preview." Nice. "No comment... I mean... Sorry, I guess." would have been better.
Don't get me wrong. There's no way the new Black Crowes album is going to be good. And this incident probably has every shitty band who's ever gotten a terrible review from the mag chomping at the bit. Not to mention that the Black Crowes have always had an infuriating sense of entitlement, and now it's bigger... and in this case entirely justified.
So, to prevent a shitty band uprising, and to curb this Black Crowes crusade / press train, if I ran Maxim, here's how I would handle this.
1. Fire some people
2. Agree to re-review the Black Crowes album.
3. Take a star away.
4. Put CORRECTION: Black Crowes get 1.5 stars on the goddamn cover of next month's issue.

The Blood Arm
NY2LON Featured ArtistVivian Banks from Bel Air

Alright, we here at NY2LON admit that The Blood Arm's latest album, Lie Lover Lie has been out for awhile, but we never gave it the attention and praise it deserved, so we are now taking the time to give it a proper spin! (Even though they're currently working on a new album - whoopsies).
For those of you who don't know who they are, The Blood Arm are the US's answer to Franz Ferdinand. Hailing from LA, they make the kind of pop music that seems to have gone out of style within recent years. Their music is just good, honest fun, with a flamboyant flair that only lead singer, Nathaniel Fregoso, could deliver.
The simple drumbeats at the start of "Suspicious Character" are infectious and introduce us to the most exciting track on the album. The song has clever lyrics ("let me steal a kiss, yah I was late for only this, and if you want one more, come back to my apartment and I'll show you what it's for") that you should definitely use this Valentine's Day to find yourself a date! The end of the track concludes with the spelling out of the word "know," which you wouldn't think to be sexy, but The Blood Arm manage to pull it off.
You can find possibly one of the meanest lyrics in the song "Angela," when Nathaniel yells, "I miss you like a nuclear bomb." Ouch. Their biography states that the lead singer realized "that his voice could lead him to heights higher than he could ever climb with his arms and legs alone." And it has undoubtedly done so. "Do I Have Your Attention?" is Nathaniel's way of conveying his message that he wants to be heard.
Almost all of the eleven songs on Lie Lover Lie are less than four minutes, making the album a forty minute masterpiece. This album deserves a lot of praise for its mature, yet simplistic pop music and warrants another listen from everyone. We're looking forward to their future work!

No Country For Old Men = Dumb
Movie Hype Can't Fool MeMe at the Movies

Hey, newsflash: Deep grizzled cowboy voices get tiresome after a while. As does the dusty frontier, as does the whole does-he-kill-him-or-doesn't-he suspense motif - especially when he always does. They try to vary the killings like a pediatrician with a goddam tetanus shot, messing with your timing: "count to 10... Onnnnne, twwwoooooo, thr-POW." But in the end, you get shot. So where's the suspense in that?
As for Tommy Lee Jones, he doesn't reallllly do anything. His character doesn't even carry a gun. I will say this about his character though: dude never misses a meal. I didn't keep track or anything, but I think he was having breakfast in every one of his scenes.

sunny side up, por favor...
I get it. Life and death is arbitrary. Nothing means anything. Drugs lead to nothing. Money leads to nothing. Evil leads to nothing. But, damned if Good doesn't end the same. Everything we do leads to nothing but death. There's chaos in order. Order in chaos. Have I got the themes? Cool. I'll be waiting on "Jumper." Hoo-ah.

Euro Now Accepted In NY Stores...
The Dollar Reportedly Jealous As Hell, But Is Too Much Of A Pussy To Really Do Anything About ItBewildered on Broadway

The dollar is no longer the bad motherfucker it used to be. Sad, really. In a development that makes me wonder if America even has its heart in it anymore, stores all over NY are now accepting Euros, the British Pound, and (I can't even say it...) the Canadian Dollar.
Jesus! Next you're gonna tell me we're gonna start using the Metric system. Measure our football fields in meters. And adopt the Royale with cheese moniker in our Mickey D's. And read temperatures in Centigrade, or Celsius... (what's the deal with that anyway.. two names for the same unit of measure? Come on folks.) Do you realize 100 degrees Farenheit is 37.8 degrees Celsius? "God, what a scorcher - it's gotta be like THIRTY SEVEN POINT EIGHT degrees out here." Does that even sound right to anyone?? Quiet down, Alistair.
Get it together Dollar. You're humiliating yourself. There's too much at stake for you to be fucking around like this.
Incidentally, if anyone would like to advertise on this site, we now accept payments in Euros, Pounds, and Canadian Dollars.

New Kanye Tour To Include Partridge In A Pear Tree
NY2LON Needs A TicketMinQ from Brooklyn

I saw Lupe at CMJ two years ago. I saw Kanye from the second row when he played a show at Boston College (yes, it probably cost the student activities committee quite a bit of change, but hey, at least we know they're not spending all their money on football). I saw N.E.R.D. play a show at a dance club in Boston with the Black Eyed Peas. Rihanna I have yet to see live, but that Umbrella-ella-ella song still makes its way into my dreams from time to time.
NY2LON is convinced that as this supernova tour rolls through the country, arenas around the country are just going to cave in on themselves, leaving huge, cosmic-level black holes in 30 or so of our major cities.
MSG will, no doubt, be a stop along the tour. So let me hereby offer NY2LON and Mrs. NY2LON's first born child for a pair of half decent tickets.
No tour dates as of yet. You'll have them as soon as... I get my tickets sorted first.
mwah.

JUICEBOXXXfrom Lauren from California's public schools

JUICEBOXXX, out of the Milwaukee suburbs, graduated high school the same year as me, and already he's played with Dan Deacon, Health, Japanther, and This Bike is a Pipe Bomb. He's tall, energy-filled, and most likely plays video games in his bedroom, if he's ever home. Juiceboxxx has been making his brand of punk rap that you can dance to since he was the ripe old age of 15. If you want to see someone get crazy on stage, don't hesitate to see the juice; he'll most likely jump off the stage right onto the back of someone else. Whenever I've seen this musician, I've felt an odd mix of fear and delirious happiness, and I think that's his plan: pump up the crowd, scare a few people who aren't ready for him, and get everyone moving (whether you're moving to the beats, or to the back of the room as to avoid getting crushed is your choice).
A sample lyric from Thunder Jam III: "I know there all the kids out there you might be like, Fuck it. What is there for me to do? What is there for me in this fucking world? Well, I'll tell you what there is, man. We got music, we got our companionship, we got each other. And nobody can take that shit away."
Somehow this young man inspires me as much as musicians who are twice his age. How does he pack so much meaning into a song that, at first, most would dismiss as a dance rap club number? I don't know, but he's got plans for a US tour, so perhaps we can all ask him then.

Kimya Dawson
NY2LON Featured ArtistLeela from New New York

Okay, okay so Kimya Dawson isn't on the entire soundtrack for the movie Juno but she sure has a monopoly on it. Some of her solo work, along with tracks by her bands The Moldy Peaches and Antsy Pants find their way onto the recording.
Kimya, along with fellow members of the Moldy Peaches have been local folk heroes here in New York, so it's a bit bizarre having to share them with the masses now. We here at NY2LON remember the days when Adam and his kooky ex-babysitter used to dress up and perform as the (actually) smelly Moldy Peaches. In the glory days they used to open for The Strokes in what are now considered exceptionally small venues for both bands. Kimya even had a baby that she appropriately named Panda! Now it seems that her time spent as the underground cult hero of New York is up and she has been thrust into the mainstream.
Juno's success is absolutely undeniable, so much so that it brought The Moldy Peaches out of their indefinite hiatus to promote their songs and the movie. Kimya and Adam Green are so well known now that they even performed on The View (where the above, incorrectly labeled picture is from).
The songs that Kimya and her collective bands contribute to the soundtrack standout not only from the other artists but also from the movie. The songs are cute, happy, emotional, sad, and a little quirky all in one, just like Juno.

Eminem Offered Backhanded Endorsement
NY2LON Doesn't Really Know What To Sayfrom the NY2LON headquarters
Em... My, how you've grown...
Reports have Eminem up to over 200 (!!) pounds. Well, the nice folks over at Slim Fast have offered Mr. Shady an endorsement deal with their famed weight-loss product.
Nobody expects him to accept. Not even the Slim Fast people, let's be real. They just wanted the publicity that came from asking.
Which is why I hope he does it. And ruins EV-erything. Gains even more weight, gets addicted to it, reveals that Slim Fast is a gateway to harder, more destructive diet and weight loss meal-replacement products.. Gets a reality show.. No, fuck that... Celebrity Biggest Loser. Yes, here's hoping. Santa, you've got my Christmas wish.

Amy Winehouse is not in rehab, she was just going for a regular clinic visit. Boo!
Heath Ledger wanted to play Nick Drake in his biopic. RIP, Heath.
Former Blur bassist Alex James filmed a documentary in Columbia about cocaine, which will air on British television next week. I wonder if James partook in any Columbian "festivities" while "investigating"...
Ringo Starr stormed off the set of Regis & Kelly after they requested he cut short the song he was to perform. What a badass!
Liars frontman Angus Andrew seriously injured his back while bending down to pick up a pillow. Almost as badass as Ringo!
David Beckham is allegedly going to provide backing vocals on Snoop Dogg's next single. We can't WAIT to hear this!

Gallows Banned From Playing Disneyland...
Social D Passes Decency TestMickey from Epcot

Remember this tune from The Little Mermaid?
If I offer to buy you a drink
Trust me when I say it's non-alcoholic
You're no good to me if you can't even speak
I don't want you passing out I want you sucking my dick
If I offer to buy you a drink
Trust me when I say it's non-alcoholic
I want you to wake up and remember my name
When you're washing my cum off your fucking face.
Alright, that wasn't The Little Mermaid... They belong to London band The Gallows, who were recently banned from playing their scheduled supporting slot at the Disneyland House of Blues in Anaheim. They were opening for fellow punk band Social Distortion. We Puritan Americans certainly can't have anyone desecrating the happiest place on earth with lyrics such as those. Social D was more mischievous than anything else... Anarchy is totally precious; sexual deviance, however, is totally unacceptable.
Gallows guitarist Laurent Bernard sees it a bit differently:
"I think Mickey Mouse got jealous that Minnie Mouse had Gallows posters on her wall... That kind of stuff happens a lot. I recommend Mickey shows Minnie some more attention, you know, take her out and make her feel special. Cartoon mice need love too."
I wish Laurent wouldn't say things like that about Mickey and Minnie. They're good Christian virgins, living good, Christian, sex-less lives. Like Mary in Biblical times. And the clergy in... I dunno... Clerical times. And this guy.. in... always...

All that being said, what does Mike Ness do here? Gallows just got banned from Disneyland for being too filthy... Would this guy have ever thought he would one day be deemed proper enough to grace a stage in Disneyland?

Britney Doesn't Set House On Fire
zzZZzZzYawning in NYC

Seriously... What is the big deal? I mean, besides the whole seeing the hot girl from high school get fat... thing...
But she's not really all that fat, is she? Nor is she that much of a mess reeeaaally. I mean, look at the lot of you. Rocks from a glass house, you know what I mean? So she's not the best mother. Who doesn't know an erratic mother who indulges in the occasional Vicodin / Klonopin / Ketel-tonic cocktail? Hell, we have shows (Nanny 911, et al) that RELY on bad parenting for content. Watch an episode of Maury one of these days. People are sleeping with their in-laws, folks. And somehow, Mo-Po can fill an hour-long show on a daily basis with this sort of dysfunction. But Earl and Sandrine from Tulsa aren't exactly famous, nor do they have all their teeth, which makes them not really all that compelling... Alright, I'll buy that.
But does anyone remember Lisa "Left Eye" from TLC (God rest her soul)? This is a woman who set fire to her boyfriend's motherfucking house. Does no one remember this? OJ Simpson killed his ex wife! So BritBrit popped a little sedative before a performance. Who hasn't? Hey, if you haven't noticed, Lance Bass is downright pining for attention. He told people he was going to space, dude. Let's channel some of our attention his way. Mario Lopez and Danny Bonaduce started a male version of the View. They'd gladly pose for your pictures, paps photogs. They'll drop babies, sneak around with strippers, hit parked cars... Viral Video idea, boys! 2 guys 1 cup. That'd definitely be worth a Page Six mention.
In conclusion, Marilyn Monroe slept with the President and his Senator brother. She married Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, then divorced them both. Can you imagine? That would be like if Britney slept with George Bush, Jeb Bush, and then married and divorced both Derek Jeter and Malcolm Gladwell. Now THAT would be a story. Wake me when you've got something like THAT. This custody battle bullshit is snores-ville.

Jay-Z to start label with Apple
a bit of news, and hero worshipMe at the NY2LON headquarters

"Jay." "Bill." "Imma own you Bill." "Huh?" "What?"
Welp. He's done it again, folks. On the heels of announcing his resignation from the cushy Presidency of Def Jam, Jay-Z is reportedly starting a label with Apple. Heard of em? With that, Jay officially stays 2 proverbial bounds ahead of everyone else. I can almost hear him now: "Radiohead did what with their last record?" he'd say, with a chuckle. And then we'd lauuugggghhhh.
So, I suppose it's only a matter of time before we have a special edition iPod with Jay-Z's entire catalogue in it. I'm thinking Gold. I want it! I want it I want it I want it!

2007, We Hardly Knew Ye
blah blah blahMQ from NYC

Ouch.
New Year's Eve, I've found, is detrimental to my health. 2 dinner parties crashed, 1 New Year's Eve bash bashed, and a til-the-sunrise nightcap all added up to a hangover that felt less like I had a festive evening ringing in the new year, but more like I had spent the night in the Pit of Despair, strapped to the water-powered torture device with Christopher Guest making snarky remarks at me while taking years off my life.
That said, I'd like to say an official and bittersweet farewell to 2007. And what better way to do that than to look ahead to '08 with some predictions based on what happened ten years ago (TEN!) in 1998. So it's like a retrospective-based look into the future. Are you really still reading this?
1998 was the year of the Boy Band: young girls lusting over baby-faced crooners, comparing "Tiger Beat" covers of Nick Carter and Justin Timberlake.
2008: Nick Carter comparing his 1998 cover of “Tiger Beat” to Justin's, muttering to himself repeatedly, "I was as popular as Justin once. I was. I was as popular as him."
1998: "Titanic" opens in theaters and basically takes over the world.
2008: I take over the world.
1998: Bill Clinton... y’know... with his intern.
2008: George Bush... I dunno. This article is dumb. I need a water.
Here's my Fave Things List from 2007:
1. Two Gallants - s/t
2. Kanye West - Graduation
w. Lastings Milledge (aka L Millz) - "Bend ya Knees"
4. Jamie T - Panic Prevention
5. Against Me! - New Wave
&. Juno
f. Mac Leopard
7. Rihanna - Umbrella Remix ft. Chris Breezy
21. 97-99 s. 3rd
10. My Birthday
11. Operation Ivy's flossed out re-release
Happiest of happy new years to you all.

The Thermals
NY2LON Live Reviewby Lauren from California's public schools

My night started off with nostalgia, talking about Anaheim with two fellow 714ers on MUNI while subtly making jabs at the gaggle of half drunk freshman who somehow escaped from the dorms in the form of an American Apparel ad (you should have seen their matching hoodies/v-necks). Somehow I asked them why they were drinking and if they were 21, and the lead goon showed us his fake ID, which was from the homeland we had been discussing, ANAHEIM! This led us into further discussion and, as luck would have it, they were going to see the Thermals as well. I told them "I'll see you there," and headed home to get a present for the Portland band, as well as listen to some songs to refresh my memory.
I got to Slim's a little early, so I bought a water and waited. Finally Cody showed up, and we went inside the venue, setting ourselves up with great spots: front and center. We made friends with a 14 year old boy named Luke, who happened to be wearing a santa hat and a bad brains shirt. It was love, instantly. He could chat like the best of them; out of all the guys I've met at shows, he was the most pleasant. The opening band was a girl group from Riverside, the Scandells. Very cute, although the singer's guitar strap was out of control, and kept falling off mid-song. It started off funny, but I just got sad by the third or fourth time it happened.
The Big Sleep, also from Portland, was the second band. The band had a nice set up: synths, keys, drums, guitar, bass, and only three members. The man next to me was thoroughly enjoying their set, but all i could do was watch him rock out and wonder if he was related to one of the members of the Big Sleep. Turns out he just really liked the prog rock and roll the band was delivering.
At Slim's, a projection screen is lowered between acts. We had to bypass this little obstacle when the thermals came out, because we needed to give one of them our specially colored My Little Pony. Cody held the page under the screen, and yelled a bit, hoping to get someone's attention. Lorin, the drummer was too far away, but singer Hutch was more than happy to take the Pony, and tape it to a speaker. We could not be more delighted! The band, Hutch, Lorin and bassist Kathy, set up their own stuff and just started...kicking out the jams? rocking out? whatever you call it, they played, and played well...and LOUD. But what else would you expect from a band like the Thermals? They started off with "Time To Lose" from their debut More Parts Per Million, and went right into "I Might Need You To Kill" from last year's The Body, The Blood, The Machine. The setlist, which was right in front of us, made our young friend Luke pretty excited. He pointed out that his four favorite songs, "St Rosa and the Swallows," "No Culture Icons," "God and Country" and "I Hold the Sound" were right next to each other. That was probably the highlight of the show, exchanging knowing "this rocks!" glances with a fourteen year old boy...yeah, that was better than when one of the drunk freshman boys from MUNI fell right behind me because he had temporarily blacked out (Hutch asked, "is he okay?" before resuming the set, and I had to explain to my dear Luke not to drink when he got older...now I know what parents must feel like). I was also a big fan of Kathy trying to make Hutch laugh using various techniques like awkwardly close dancing and silly faces.
The set "ended" with "Pillar of Salt" and we waited patiently for an encore. The aforementioned screen didn't even go up, so there was no tricking the audience. We were wonderfully surprised to hear a cover, Big Dipper by Built to Spill! The real end of the night was "It's Trivia," a perfect cap to a really loud set by everyone's favorite socially conscious pop-punk band. We can agree that they make pop-punk less of a dirty word.

Michel Gondry did it again. I haven't seen the video yet but it looks like it's going to be yet another mind-blower. Check out the making of the video for Bjork's latest single, 'Declare Independence' over at Spinner and check back on 12/6 when it actually goes live. Something about that little Icelandic elf princess and that silly French genius always makes me smile.

Ryan Adams Top Fiveby Lauren from California's public schools
Hey, it's me, Lauren, again with another list.
Here are the top five ways you can tell Ryan Adams runs his own website.

5. Scary (or annoying?) computer simulation of a human voice telling us about the mothership. Obviously, only a genius like the one and only Mr. Adams would have something that keeps away the less than hardcore fans...can't scare me away, though.
4. When you scroll over one of the control panels (the one with a t-shirt insignia) a delightful sound greets your ears: the word MERCH in a sing song. Real fans just keep scrolling over the merch button, over and over, to hear Ryan Adams say it repeatedly.
3. Cardinals Radio. When this first appeared, I could not be more pleased. Tons of Ryan Adams "side projects" free and online? Awesome! Ryan Adams rapping (DJ Reggie), is always the favorite, but other experiments are also worth a few listens. Every single album has at least one track that could compete for best song title of all time (my favorites: "Snapz the Clown" from the similarly titled album, "When I Was Drugs Inc" from 4:20/20, and "Drunk and In Jail for Arson" from Hillbilly Joel, which is my favorite of his concept albums).
2. The biography section, which is super hard to find, has a soundtrack of its own. It sure sounds like Ryan Adams is doing impersonations of his band and friends. It also has a list of vocabulary that the Cardinals use, just in case you should ever meet them. A bio excerpt: "The Cardinals are a band focused on music and are based on the planet Earth, a satellite of Sol, or "The Sun," the center of the galaxy. They rely heavily on naps, food, metal, reggae mixes..."
1. The password for a special promotion is SPACEWOLF. SPACEWOLF? SPACEWOLF!? Who would come up with such a delightful promotional code? Ryan Adams, that's who!

Best Outfits (stage and otherwise) of 2007by Lauren from California's public schools
When it comes to lists, I love them, but I think they need a lot of photos to make them less...you know...wordy. That being said, I shall introduce my list of love: Best Outfits (stage and otherwise) of 2007. I don't really have that great of an eye for fashion, but I'm definitely going to try this out. In chronological order, of course:
February: Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal.

This man could be on this list half a dozen times at least. However, I think I’ll cut that down to two. This little striped number, paired with sparkly ribbon, pantyhose, and bright blue shoes (a staple of any great outfit) started the year off wonderfully.
March, Langhorne Slim.

To be able to dress like Jimmy Stewart and get a bunch of kids to jump on stage with the gusto of any punk rock god...is pretty darn cool. Fedora, check. Vest, check. Dress shirt and shoes, check, check. Slacks? Check...
June, Dan Deacon.

Who else could channel the Amazon rainforest with only a t-shirt and some cut off shorts? Notice the muscular legs, and unmatched socks.
June, Juiceboxxx.

If you don't know the juiceboy now, you will...and judging by this little summer outfit, he'll be dressed to impress...impress the 20-somethings who don't like to change clothes that much, but will still add some flash with a gold belt, or band-aid.
September, Gil from Kinky.

It may sound cheesy, but an all black outfit contrasts well with a guitar of any color. And I love men in fedoras. A+, Gil!
November, Kelly from Architecture in Helsinki.

This girl embodies my ideal outfit: glamorous or ironic t-shirt with a flashy pair of shiny leggings. I've yet to duplicate it successfully, but I've been trying.

Yep, Kevin Barnes is on this list again. Only because he has the best accessories. In this case, it's his brother, David, who also has a Katana sword in hand! Actually, they both had Katanas. How cool is that?

Visual StimulationMary from Park Slope, BK
Since we posted Two Gallants' video for "Despite What You've Been Told", it has been featured on the homepage of YouTube, and viewed by over 235,000 people. I like to believe NY2LON had a hand in securing that many viewers (wink, wink). Therefore, I have decided to post a few other recent videos that have caught my attention.
This song makes me dance in my chair in the NY2LON offices. (People often give me weird looks when I dance, but I don't care. They know I can throw it down.)
Vampire Weekend - "Masnard Roof"
Embrace the buzz. I love this song, and I kinda want to join a yacht club.
The Comas - "Come My Sunshine"
One of the best albums of the year. Not only are they also the nicest people you will ever meet, Nicole proves that women can rock and still be respectable. (Down with Amy)
Kate Nash - "Foundations"
Kate Nash gets brownie points for FINALLY coming to the States. (see yesterday's post) Also, we haven't posted on her in almost a year. Sorry, Kate. We've always loved you. To make up for it, you get two videos.
Kate Nash - "Mouthwash"
Starlight Express scared the shit out of me as a child. (and I'm still kinda scared of it...)
Snoop Dogg - "Gin & Juice"
Because you always need some old skool Snoop....

Johnny ForeignerBy Pius Shine from London

Fight Pop, Noise Pop, Post Pop, Art Pop, whatever label gets thrown at Johnny Foreigner, you can bet your bottom dollar they'll be right at the forefront of that genre in 6 months time. Something very exciting is happening in the UK right now and bands such as Johnny Foreigner and Danananaykaroyd are going to tear new rave a new arsehole.
The three piece from Digbeth, Birmingham (Alexei, Junior, Kelly) formed a little over twelve months ago and after two sold out limited 7" releases their debut mini album 'Arcs Across The City' is coming out in the UK on November 26th on Best Before Records. Certain sections of the music press are already stirring...
“No post-Gang of Four stop-starts, no post-Libertines jangle, no post-Klaxons keys and punk-funk. Wow! Here was a band that had listened to Emergency & I Plan and actually knew where We Are Scientists got their name from, but with the added twist of anglicising these mathy, frenetic melodies and urgent rhythms into something refreshingly listenable." Pitchfork Media
"Johnny Foreigner play noise pop with scratchy guitars and lo-fi busy beats. They sound like a mix of Huggy Bear, Help She Can`t Swim and Cap`n Jazz. Essential." Rough Trade

Cass McCombs
NY2LON Featured ArtistRoley Poley Pete in Park Slope

I'm mad at myself. I've heard Cass McCombs' name here and there, on and off for the past few years, but have never been smart enough to take a few minutes to actually listen to him.
Well, I finally did listen to him, and he's pretty great. His music is quirky to say the least, but now I get why people are into "weird" artists like Patrick Wolf, etc: because their music is interesting. I can honestly say I've never heard anything like Cass' music before. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's soft, gothic Americana. Both his music and his lyrics are very poetic, and the listener can easily get lost and drift off while listening to his quiet, hazy songs.
His latest album, Dropping the Writ, is out now on Domino. See him on tour:

Death Vessel and St. Vincent
Live Review Lauren from California's public schools

Death Vessel's "Break The Empress Crown" is to my group of friends what Rihanna's "Umbrella" is to most of the nation--the frickin' song of the summer, YO!
Before the show at Cafe Du Nord, I was lucky enough to speak to Joel from Death Vessel. The man is one of the most gracious musicians I've met. He talked to us for almost half an hour about nothing in particular: Oakland, private vs. public school, hybrid cars, touring, and he listened as I rambled and rambled. We finally tore ourselves away as Joel had real friends to talk to.
It's hard to believe that we 19 year old ne'er do wells got into the 21+ show. We were armed with IDs of friends that looked pretty dissimilar to us but should pass...and it worked! We were now well on our way to seeing the band that had defined much of our summer.
The opening act, Ferraby Lionheart, was a slender lad from LA. He could sing a mean song and play really pretty harmonica and piano...basically what you'd expect from a man with such a name. I couldn't pay attention, as much as I tried, due to pain in my legs (damn heels, shoulda chosen sensible shoes).
Finally, Joel took the stage, armed only with his guitar and a little amp. Joel Thibodeau is a small man, but with long hair and nice arms (he must lift weights); basically the exact opposite of what you'd expect from the person behind DV, mainly because the voice of DV almost sounds like a female's. He had told us that all his equipment fit into a Prius, and now I believed him. I almost cried a bit when Joel opened up his mouth to sing "Deep in the Horchata" and the angelic voice of Death Vessel emerged. If you haven't heard the band, I suggest you look them up at this moment.
He was intense from the start; when he sang he squeezed his left eye a little more closed, almost as if he had to for some reason. My theory: he was pushing out the raw emotion that is Death Vessel. "Later in the Life Lift" was the second song in the set and by this time I had adjusted to what I was seeing, though I still looked over at my friend every once in a while as if to say, 'I can't believe we got in and we're watching this.' Every song that I could possibly want to hear off of Stay Close was on the very visible setlist, and I knew that I wasn't dreaming. When "Tidy Nervous Breakdown" began I prompty got out my cell phone to record the song. I was a little upset with the noise level in Cafe Du Nord, but since I was about four feet from Joel it didn't distract me very much. Joel sang a few songs not on the record (one was an awesome cover of a love song that was so beautiful I fell in love with the world again) which could only give me hope that a new Death Vessel album will be coming soon. Joel ended with "Blowing Cave," then thanked the audience, very quietly--I could barely hear him when he wasn't singing!
St. Vincent was a whole act at Cafe Du Nord, compared to the last time I saw Annie Clark perform under the name with only her guitar and microphones. Annie, backed by three Berkeley music grads and a colorful backdrop, took the stage around 11:30 or midnight. I had hoped to swing by Annie's Social Club to see Go Betty Go, but would not get the chance because the complicated setup of St. Vincent took a while to perfect. The drunk guy next to me actually yelled something like, "What took you so long?!" and she looked really offended (though later she let him hit the musical appendage of a mannequin that she uses as percussion). St. Vincent was a tight group-one drummer, one bassist, and one violinist who all played other instruments as the songs progressed; no set list needed, all professional and no sloppiness. I've never seen a girl shred like Annie Clark does; I've seen punk shows and no woman has ever come close. The lady can play guitar while switching between her two specific microphones and stomping and pressing the various pedals and gadgets that created the set's full sound. She's obviously talented--Annie plays all the instruments on the album--and she's another angel-voiced singer and obviously adorable. She also commanded the crowd; they were much quieter during her set. We were pretty tired, and I didn't think I could stay the whole show, so I was praying Annie would get to my favorite song, "Marry Me," which she did. It was definitely an unexpectedly wonderful night.

Thee Makeout Party!By Lauren from California's public schools

Thee Makeout Party! is a band that I just can't leave alone. Every time I get the chance, I make a point of seeing the Anaheim band. Not only does this band remind me of my long lost home, but they're also really talented musicians and genuinely nice people. A Thee! show generally consists of upbeat songs about fun, birthday suits, Mitch Hedberg, love or luv, and wacky stories by bassist Lee (I think he should pursue a career in comedy).
When you see Thee! live, the energy is apparent: the boys are smiling, the crowd is dancing, and everyone is enjoying themselves. The sound is a mix of old fashion rock and roll and garage-pop, often garnering comparisons to The Raspberries or even The Ramones. The songs you'll hear, if you are so lucky to catch a set, are all-out fun ones that will make you want to take a quick jaunt around the suburbs or at least get into a snowball fight. Believe me, once you see this band you'll be waiting for them to return to your town.
The foursome recently toured across America, and recorded a debut album with help from Travis of The Fevers.

We Are Back From Holiday
from NY2LON HQ in Brooklyn
Some of you may have thought that NY2LON slipped into a coma a few weeks ago. Some of you may have thought that we were just being slackers. Some of you may have even thought deciede to stalk volleyball hotties Scotty Wong and Aaron Watchfogel for the rest of the AVP tour. (I wish that last one was true. They really are hot.)
Instead NY2LON decided to enjoy the last few weeks of summer, and go on vacation. We kicked our shoes off, sipped lemonade, and watched the trees grow. And after five minutes of that, we decided to get off our lazy asses, and have a lot of fucking fun. Check out these pictures from our crazy adventures

Cancer Fucking Sucks
R.I.P. Tony Wilson and Hilly Kristalfrom NY2LON Headquarters
Earlier this month, we lost Tony Wilson to kidney cancer at the age of 57. Wilson is responsible for the sound of England throughout the past thirty years, and for placing Manchester on the map. In addition to managing The Hacienda nightclub, and founding Factory Records, Wilson inspired the punk revolution in England during the mid 1970s, as well as directly being responsible for the greatness of musical legends Joy Division, New Order, and the Happy Mondays.
Yesterday, Hilly Kristal, owner of CBGBs and the man responsible for the punk revolution in the states, also lost his battle with lung cancer. He was 75. CBGBs became the epicenter of New York and American punk rock explosion during the mid 1970s and 80s, with the help of bands such as the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, and Patti Smith. Even after CBGBs closed in October 2006, after 33 years and a long battle with its landlord, Kristal was a common fixture in the East Village. A private memorial will be held over the next few days, with a public tribute to follow at a date to be announced.
We lost two amazing talents this month. However, their legacies will live on...
