WTF?
What is WTF?
What The Fuck, why are you asking that question?
What is NY2LON?
NY2LON is a lot of things and will hopefully eventually be more. But, for brevity's sake:
NY2LON stands for New York to London. NY2LON is a concept that was started to bridge the gap between the music coming through the US and the UK. NY2LON is all about giving exposure to what is new and good without the usual politics and budgetary constraints getting in the way.
NY2LON was conceived and developed as a series of focused Special Events geared towards properly introducing new bands from the UK to US media, industry and music fans. NY2LON was launched at SXSW 2005 in Austin, Texas and had its New York launch later that year. NY2LON will be one of the most anticipated events at SXSW 2006 and is planning another NY event as well as the London Launch in mid-2006.
NY2LON.com was launched in February 2006.
NY2LON will release its first Compilation Album in Spring 2006.
How do I pronounce NY2LON?
NOT Nylon. NOT NY to Lon. New York to London. As in two places that always seem to have some great music coming to them and out of them.
Who started NY2LON?
NY2LON was started by some people based in both New York and London who were frustrated with the lag time in promoting bands internationally. We don't see NY2LON as the answer to international promotion per say but we are hoping it is a step in the right direction.
Why do you do so few NY2LON events?
NY2LON is run by people who already work 37 hour days without this damned NY2LON thing. Seriously though, NY2LON is a labor of love for us and we prefer to do only a select few events, and to do these events the right way with the right bands. We have very high standards and it is a lot of work.
It is much easier to do these kinds of events at Industry-centric Conferences - such as SXSW or The Great Escape - where there are great bands that are already in town on somebody else's dime. We will be doing more events in New York and London as well but only when fate and timing allows us to have the right line-up of bands in front of the right people.
Is NY2LON focused solely on NY and London bands?
No, absolutely not. The term NY2LON refers to those territories that have an overflow of great new music coming through them but little synergy between them. NY2LON aims to promote bands from all over the world and our events, Compilation and editorial coverage on the NY2LON.com hopefully reflect that. Our weekly featured artists that are selected on the site are chosen based on these bands getting love in either NY or London, not because they are actually from one of those cities.
Do bands that you know or work with have a better chance of getting promoted with NY2LON?
Yes of course. NY2LON was started by 2 very small, independent-minded companies - 1 in NY and 1 in London - who only work with a handful of bands based on their discriminating taste. We started NY2LON to better promote the bands that we think are good this of course includes the bands that we have relationships with, especially in the beginning as we are getting things going. But the point of NY2LON is to far exceed the bands that we already know and love. The point of NY2LON is to discover and promote what is coming next. So keep the music coming...
Do you only work with signed bands or bands that are getting buzz overseas?
We honestly couldn't care less. If we like it and think that other people will dig it, we will promote it. We just need to be aware of it...which leads us to...
How can NY2LON help my band?
Well, there are a few ways which NY2LON can help your band. We do special events at Festivals such as SXSW in Austin, Texas and The Great Escape in Brighton, UK as well as in both New York City and London, so if your band is in any of these cities, you can submit your band for our next event. We only do events every few months as it takes a hell of a lot of work to pull these off.
We just released our first NY2LON Compilation. We are planning on doing a second Compilation at some point...
We started NY2LON.com so we can plug bands from all over the world, rather than just bands that have the resources and means to play the territories where we are doing events.
How do I get my band involved with NY2LON?
Include some info on your band with your website and/or MySpace account.
No MP3's please, our inboxes are clogged enough. If we like what we hear on your site and/or MySpace, we will email you back and ask for some music. Please don't be insulted if you don't hear back from us, we are very selective and we get many submissions every week.
Why do you pick certain bands over others for NY2LON?
We have a team of people both in the US and the UK who choose bands that we want to promote. It is completely subjective based on our collective personal tastes. Fights break out over band selections all of the time, often physical. There is no rhyme or reason other than we like certain bands and want to help them succeed. So don't be discouraged or insulted if we don't pick your band. What do we know anyway?
Why should I read NY2LON.com?
There are lots of places to read about new music. We started NY2LON.com with a focus on building a community to give insight on the bands we think you should know about as well as commentary on the scene surrounding that music. The people who post on NY2LON.com are primarily people with knowledge and experience in the music industry and media and the goal lies in offering perspective without the limitations of going 'on the record.' All writers have the freedom to post anonymously without the fear of getting fired. We hope this translates to unbiased, honest and passionate content.
NY2LON.com at its onset will primarily document what is going on in New York and the UK but we hope that it ultimately becomes one of the main destinations for what is going on in new music worldwide.
Who posts on NY2LON.com? How do I post?
Well, anyone can post in the Discuss section.
As far as posts go, we have a team of people running around both New York and the UK, writing about what they are hearing and seeing from both sides of the Atlantic.
If you would like to join our writing community, email us here.
We are always looking for new people to write. And it does not matter where you live, as long as you feel you have an ear and voice for new music. We would love to expand the editorial on this site to many more cities, so definitely email us if you would like to contribute.
